Summit Street Road Diet (Lucas County)

Summit at 131 looking north
Summit Street at 131st, looking north

We are pleased to see the recently completed road diet on Summit Street just north of downtown Toledo. The project begins at 131st Street and ends at the Ohio state line where the Michigan side continues with paved shoulders (that is another campaign). Thanks to the Lucas County Engineer's office for reaching out to We Are Traffic for project review and input. There is a recently completed study for the Vistula Neighborhood that would add bike lanes to Summit between Cherry St. and I-280 and we hope that if that segment is developed, the City would extend the bike lanes north. As for the section near Promenade Park, no bike lanes were included but we are asking for sharrows and BMUFL signage to promote the corridor for commuting.

Kilburn Bike Lanes Phase 1 of 3

UPDATE: August 3, 2020 - Phase 1 is completed! Thanks to Lucas County, Richfield Township and the residents along Kilburn Road! When completed, this will provide a great connection to Secor Metroparks and the new trail to Wiregrass Metropark and beyond!

Kilburn Bike Lanes Phase 1

Steady progress on the first section of bike lanes that will evetually connect Secor Metroparks to Sylvania-Metamora Road. This is "Phase 1" that runs from the Metropark entrance on Central Avenue to Sylvania Avenue. Construction is expected to complete Summer of 2020! Phase 2 has funding for construction in 2021 that will continue the lanes to Brint Road. The final phase is not fully funded. Special thanks to the Lucas County Engineer's Office for making this happen, originally conceived around 2005!

Donate to Cycling Without Age

Please consider making a donation to support this program! Thanks to our generous donors, we have our first bike and trailer, with hopes to add a second bike for next season. Donations are made to Maumee Valley Adventurers, a 501c3 non-profit (tax receipt available).

Cycling Without Age is a movement started in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to the local nursing home residents.

He then got in touch with a civil society consultant from the City of Copenhagen, Dorthe Pedersen (now Cycling Without Age), who was intrigued by the idea and together they bought the first 5 trishaws and launched Cycling Without Age, which has now spread to all corners of Denmark, and since 2015 to another 38 countries around the world.

We are working with Maumee Valley Adventurers and other local partners to bring this program to the greater Toledo area, for more information on how you can get involved, contact keith@WeAreTraffic.org

Last Bike Rack Installation for 2019!

As the year comes to a close, we celebrate our last bike rack installation of 2019. This project demonstrates how long it can take to make change and the power of perseverance. We first contacted Chick-fil-A on February 11, 2016 about the need for bicycle parking at their Talmadge-Sylvania location. Long story short and almost four years later, We Are Traffic provided installation guidance and bike racks installed by the contractor. Special thanks to the owner-operator Jonathan Winn for supporting our efforts and Horizon Construction that went out of their way to purchase the racks from We Are Traffic. When we supply the hardware, we keep some of those funds local to help support our advocacy efforts.

We would like to thank everyone for supporting our initiatives to improve safety and provide routine accommodations for cyclists!
